7 Things I Learned Working With B2B Manufacturers

Over the past several years, I have worked closely with B2B manufacturers on their websites and digital marketing. Along the way, I have noticed some clear patterns in how these businesses operate and think about growth. Here are seven things I learned.

1. Most Founders Are In Their 50s and 60s

Most B2B manufacturer founders I have worked with are in their mid 50s or 60s. They built their companies over decades, and their experience shows in how well they understand their product, their industry, and their customers.

2. The Second Generation Now Handles Operations

In many of these companies, the second generation has joined the business. They usually take care of operations and the technical side of things. A few of them also handle sales and marketing, but this is less common.

3. Every Part Of The Business Has Evolved, Except Marketing

These companies have improved in almost every area, research, operations, and engineering. But marketing is often left behind. Many manufacturers still depend on old marketing methods that worked years ago but no longer bring the same results.

4. Growth Without New Customers Has Limits

Some manufacturers relied only on their existing clients and did not try to grow their customer base. They kept fulfilling the demand of their current clients and expanded their manufacturing setup to keep up. After some time, they realised they had expanded too much, and now they need new customers to fully use their production capacity.

5. Early Digital Adopters Are Winning

The manufacturers who adopted a digital strategy early have benefited the most. They have grown steadily and increased their turnover, while others are still catching up.

6. Most Marketing Systems Stop At Getting Leads

Most manufacturers’ marketing systems focus only on the acquisition stage, meaning they work hard to get new leads. But they rarely work on nurturing those leads and converting them into paying customers. This means a lot of potential business is left on the table.

7. Marketing Needs To Be Continuous, Not Occasional

Some manufacturers believe marketing is not something you do all the time. They feel they can market only when they feel like it, or when business is slow. But marketing works best when it is consistent, not something that is switched on and off.

In Summary

These patterns are common, but they are not permanent. Manufacturers who recognise these gaps and address them early tend to grow faster and depend less on their existing client base. If any of these points sound familiar to your own business, it may be worth taking a closer look at how your company approaches marketing today.
